Litany for Theological Teachers
Almighty God, you have made your truth known to us over many generations, and have called some to the task of bearing that truth and interpreting it afresh for those who come after. We who are gathered here have come to take our various parts in that service, so that your word may be heard and your church throughout the world may be sustained and renewed. Merciful God, hear us as we ask for the gifts we need to serve you as we ought.
For all who teach and all who learn, that they may do so in all humility and openness, remembering that all insight comes from you:
Lord, give us quietness of spirit. For all who struggle and are overburdened with work and studies and more responsibilities than they can carry, that they may find in you peace and grace to meet their need:
Lord, give us strength. For all who feel keenly the weaknesses and failures of this community, and long for what we ought to be:
Lord, give us patience and persistence. For all of us as we are tempted to speak when we should listen, to advise when we should support, to be right when we should be helpful:
Lord, give us gentleness. For all who wrestle with questions whose answers elude them, and who are tempted by doubt and despair:
Lord, give us your light. For all who seek to know and to speak your truth in world captivated by falsehood:
Lord, give us wisdom. And now, Lord, we offer our prayers for your universal church in whose service we labor. Where it is corrupt, purify it; where it is in error, correct it; where it is grown slack, reform it; where it is faithful, strengthen it; and where it is divided, reunite it, for the sake of your Son who died and rose again that it might be established, pleasing in your sight, forever.
AMEN.
Prayer for Peace and Justice
May God bless us with discomfort at easy answers, half-truths, and superficial relationships, so that we will live deep in our hearts.
May God bless us with anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people and the earth, so that we will work for justice, equity, and peace.
May God bless us with tears to shed for those who suffer, so we will reach out our hands to comfort them and change their pain to joy.
And may God bless us with the foolishness to think that we can make a difference in the world, so we will do the things which others say cannot be done.
AMEN.
