An Introduction to Wesley's Programs

Master of Divinity

The Master of Divinity (M.Div.) is the degree closely tied to a call to ordained leadership in most mainline Christian denominations. Wesley's M.Div. will help you prepare for a lifetime of fruitful leadership whether you are called to pastor a church, a specialized chaplaincy or a ministry beyond the local church. Our specialized M.Div. programs allow you to focus on Youth Ministry, Urban Ministries, Emerging Church Ministries or as a United Methodist Student Pastor.

Master of Arts

Wesley's Master of Arts (M.A.) will prepare you for ministry in the church as a professional lay person or ordained deacon.

Masters of Theological Studies

If you simply want to do focused academic study, the Masters of Theological Studies (M.T.S.) offers you the most flexibility. We also have dual-degree options with American University's programs in International Peace and Conflict Resolution and International Development.

Doctor of Ministry

The Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) degree is for active clergy who have a Master of Divinity and want to enhance their practice of ministry. Specific tracks of study - including Arts and Theology, Pastoral Theology, Care and Counseling, Spirituality, and Faith and the Health of Communities begin each May and January.

National Capital Semester for Seminarians (NCSS)

Spend an entire semester at a dynamic intersection of faith and politics. Seminarians from across the country join Wesley students each spring for National Capital Semester for Seminarians (NCSS) to engage in an intensive and transforming study of ethics, theology and public policy.

Options for Church Lay Members

The Equipping Lay Ministry (ELM) program prepares you as a lay person in the church for leadership in specific areas of ministry including: Christian Education, Evangelism, Hispanic/Latino Ministry, Parish Nursing, Small Group Bible Study, Spiritual Formation, Worship and Liturgical Arts, Youth Ministry, and Suicide Prevention. These classes also meet United Methodist General Board of Higher Education Certification requirements.

Washington Theological Consortium

Wesley degree students who have completed at least one semester of study on the Wesley campus are eligible (M.Div. requirement) to take core and/or elective courses through the Washington Theological Consortium, a community of theological institutions rooted in diverse Christian traditions.  For more information, please visit the Academic Regulations section of the Wesley 2006-2007 Catalog.

Options for the Undecided

Enrolling as a Special Student is a way for you to take classes for masters-level credit without declaring a degree. Up to nine hours of courses you take as a special student can carry into a degree program. Pfeiffer University Master of Arts students can take classes either at the Charlotte or Misenheimer campuses.
