Academic Dean

Wesley Theological Seminary invites applications and nominations for the position of Academic Dean. 

Wesley Theological Seminary is a graduate theological school of The United Methodist Church located in Washington, DC. It is one of the largest and most diverse seminaries in the world. During the academic year, more than 1,500 students attend classes at Wesley. Degree programs include Master of Divinity, Master of Arts, Master of Theological Studies and Doctor of Ministry. Almost 60 percent of the students are Methodist; the remaining 40 percent represent more than 25 different denominations. Forty-four percent of the students are African American, Hispanic, Asian or other ethnic minority. Wesley's faculty includes 30 full-time faculty members and 25 adjunct faculty members.

The Dean is the Chief Academic Officer and responsible directly to the President. The Dean's responsibilities include policy, program, personnel development and fiscal management for the faculty and academic programs. The Dean is expected to provide vision and leadership in strategic planning and promote excellence in teaching and scholarship.

The best candidates for the position will possess an earned doctorate in a field of theological education and have a distinguished record of graduate teaching, scholarship, and active participation in the life of the church. In addition, candidates should have a demonstrated record of administrative competence and enthusiasm for the seminary's global perspective and programs. Vice President for Development   

Wesley Theological Seminary seeks candidates for the role of Vice President for Development.  This position is responsible for the planning and general oversight of the development program at Wesley Theological Seminary, a graduate theological school of The United Methodist Church located in Washington, DC. The Vice President for Development is considered the senior development officer at Wesley and reports to the President. The VP for Development represents the Seminary in local churches, to small groups, and individuals through both mail and face to face appeals. The Vice President for Development is expected to spend a majority of time in major gift cultivation and solicitation and works directly with the President to coordinate his work in development. The Vice President for Development is a key part of the senior administrative team seeing to implement Wesley's strategic vision.

Qualifications include knowledge and love of the church and outstanding interpersonal skills. Prior experience in fundraising or leadership in higher education, the church or business are preferred. Director of the Practice of Ministry and Mission

Wesley seeks a Director of its contextual education program (Practice of Ministry and Mission) to begin no sooner than Jan. 1, 2009 and no later than July 1, 2009. Rank open and determined by qualifications and experience. Tenure track position.

Director, Henry Luce III Center for the Arts and Religion

Wesley Theological Seminary seeks a Director for it distinguished Henry Luce III Center for the Arts and Religion. The Center seeks to promote, understand, and expand the interface between the artistic and the religious imagination. Its programs include course work in the visual and performing arts, integration of the arts into the Seminary's overall curriculum, the Dadian Gallery, an artists-in-residence program, an art studio, special events for the community, and outreach to promote the arts in the ministries of constituent churches. The Director will have administrative oversight over these programs as well as teaching and scholarship responsibilities.

• Advanced degrees in both artistic and theological disciplines.

The James C. Logan Chair in Evangelism

Faculty Position in Worship

Wesley Theological Seminary seeks to fill a tenure-track position in Worship. The candidate should have competence in liturgy and worship. A strong candidate will demonstrate the ability to teach introductory level as well as advanced and doctoral level courses in liturgy and worship.
It is desirable for the successful candidate to show familiarity with and teach in all or most of the following areas:

Director of Finance and Administration at Shalem Institute

Shalem is seeking an experienced finance & accounting professional to serve as Shalem's Director of Finance & Administration (DF&A) and to work as part of a collegial team to further Shalem's mission of nurturing contemplative living and leadership.

The person in this position has a unique opportunity to explore the spirituality of money and how money and financial management might be approached from a contemplative stance-present, open and empty, mindful, willing and listening for God.

The responsibilities of this position include all aspects of accounting for the organization, including the daily bookkeeping (receivables, payables, payroll), internal financial reporting, and annual budget preparation. Responsibilities also include accounts receivable collections, administration of employee benefit plans and leave records, computer network administration, and oversight of other aspects of office administration. The DF&A attends and participates in Board meetings and acts as the primary staff liaison and support to the Board Treasurer and the Finance Committee. S/he also attends administrative staff meetings, monthly staff prayer and an annual two-day staff retreat.

In addition to the responsibilities mentioned above, the ideal candidate will have experience with computers and accounting software, plus Microsoft Word and Excel. Knowledge of FileMaker database applications and Apple computers would be very helpful. The work is detail-oriented but also requires maintaining a broad organizational perspective. One must be self-motivated, need minimal supervision, and be able to prioritize and meet deadlines. Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills also are needed.

UPCaM is a national award-winning ecumenical campus ministry supported by mainline Protestant denominations, individual congregations, and friends. It serves students at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University and Cuyahoga Community College.

The primary responsibilities of the Executive Director, the only full-time employee at present, are as follows: to provide leadership, direction, pastoral care and support to student groups on several campuses; to supervise part-time professionals, support staff and student interns; to equip trustees for effective support of UPCaM's mission; to promote UPCaM to individual congregations and denominational judicatories; and to creatively approach sources of additional financial support.
